Composer, Performer, and My Favorite Emerging Artist from Colombia

I’ve followed Aníbal de los Reyes’ music for quite some time. He is an emerging artist who is not only a performer but also a talented composer and arranger. Aníbal has collaborated with industry names like Naoto, Juliana Velasquez, Santiago Cruz, Wamba, Black Pop y Johann Vera.

He also co-founded the collective «Pandora» with Ricardo Campillo and Daniel Jaller. My admiration for his work led to a close connection, allowing us to collaborate on corporate audio projects, a song camp and the production of a few jingles.

Challenges and Learning in Mixing Aníbal de los Reyes’ ‘Desaparecer’

Working on the mix for «Desaparecer» by Aníbal de los Reyes was an experience full of challenges and learning. It was an honor to be invited by Aníbal to bring this powerful pop ballad from his upcoming EP to life. However, the process wasn’t straightforward from the start. Although I usually connect quickly with my clients’ expectations, the first version of the mix didn’t align with what Aníbal had envisioned. Initially, I had opted for a more subtle approach, but after a careful review and listening to his references, I realized the song needed a more aggressive direction, with heavier compression and a more distinctive sonic character.

This change in perspective led me to reevaluate every element of the mix. I made adjustments to the equalization and effects, aiming to highlight the energy that the track demanded. One of the key changes was in the mix bus processing, where I applied more intense techniques to enhance the strength and emotion of Aníbal’s performance. After a couple of adjustments, we finally captured the tone and intensity the song required. This project was, without a doubt, an incredible and enriching experience that reminded me of the importance of keeping an open mind and adapting to the unique needs of each production.
